IPTV player compatibility: find the right app for your device

Not every IPTV player runs on every device. Start from the device you will watch on, check that the app accepts your login type, then test it before paying for any upgrade.

Last updated

This guide is about choosing a player that works on your device. If you first want to know what a player app is, read what is an IPTV player; if you are weighing up paid upgrades, see free vs paid IPTV player apps.

The three things that decide compatibility

  1. Platform. The app must exist in the official store for your device: Android TV, Fire TV, Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, tvOS, iOS, Android, Windows or macOS. An app that is great on Android TV may not exist on a Samsung TV at all.
  2. Login format. The app must accept the type of login your provider gives you, usually an Xtream Codes login or an M3U playlist link.
  3. Features. A TV guide (EPG), favourites, catch-up, multiple profiles or recording support vary from app to app, and some are paid extras.

Start with your device

Find your device family below to see where its player apps come from and which step-by-step guide to follow. Not sure what your TV runs? See how to find your TV’s operating system.

Where to get a player for each device family
Device Get player apps from Good to know Setup guide
Android TV and Google TV Google Play Store One of the most flexible platforms: many player apps support both Xtream Codes and M3U logins plus an on-screen TV guide. IPTV on Android TV and Google TV
Amazon Fire TV Amazon Appstore Use a player that is available in the Amazon Appstore for your region. A newer stick model handles high-bitrate streams more smoothly. Install apps on a Fire TV Stick
Samsung Smart TV (Tizen) Samsung Smart Hub / Apps The app selection is smaller than on Android. Check that the player supports your login format before you buy any paid app licence. IPTV on a Samsung Smart TV
LG Smart TV (webOS) LG Content Store As on Samsung, available players vary by model year and region. Older webOS versions may not receive app updates. IPTV on an LG Smart TV
Apple TV App Store (tvOS) Several tvOS players accept M3U playlists and Xtream Codes logins. Apple TV 4K models decode high-bitrate streams comfortably. IPTV on Apple TV
Android TV boxes Google Play Store (certified boxes) Prefer Google-certified boxes that receive security updates. Uncertified boxes can ship with outdated software. Fire TV Stick vs Android TV box
Phones and tablets Google Play Store or Apple App Store Convenient for watching on the move. On mobile data, lower the stream quality in the player to save data. Android phone or tablet
iPhone and iPad
Windows, macOS and Linux computers Official developer websites or the OS app store Desktop players such as VLC open M3U playlists directly. Dedicated IPTV players add a channel list and TV guide. IPTV on a Windows PC or Mac

Match the app to your login type

The store listing or the app’s own help should say which login types it accepts. Look for the exact wording:

  • Xtream Codes (sometimes “Xtream API” or “login with server URL”): you enter a server address, username and password. See what is an Xtream Codes login.
  • M3U (sometimes “playlist URL” or “M3U8”): you paste one long link. See what is an M3U playlist.
  • TV guide: with an M3U link you may also need a separate EPG (XMLTV) address; see how to add an EPG URL.

If a listing does not mention your login type at all, assume it is not supported and pick another app.

What to check before installing a player

  • Official store listing: the app is in your device’s own app store and was updated recently.
  • Login support: the description explicitly mentions Xtream Codes, M3U or both.
  • EPG support: it can show a TV guide, and accepts an XMLTV/EPG link if you use M3U.
  • Remote-friendly interface: on a TV, the app should work fully with the remote.
  • Decoder options: a choice of hardware and software decoding helps fix playback problems.
  • Clear pricing: many players are free with a paid upgrade. Read what the paid tier adds before buying.
  • Privacy: check the store’s privacy section for the data the app collects.

Pick a player in three steps

  1. Find your device family in the table above or on the Cobra IPTV compatible devices page.
  2. Shortlist two apps in your store that support your login type and a TV guide.
  3. Install the free version first, sign in and test for a day before paying for any upgrade.

Then follow the Cobra IPTV setup guide to enter your login details.
